Five Year Plan
School
My education at Idaho State University is my top
priority at this point in my life.
There are a lot of opportunities outside of school that I
think could be valuable in life, however, I feel that to become the
person I really want to be involves a lifetime of education.
I have not limited the possibilities to only Idaho State;
however, I feel that the school provides good resources and planning
for an optimal degree in business.
One of my greatest concerns has been financing a degree.
For the first two years of my education, I was able to borrow
tuition money from my parents.
One factor that really helped was the $550 received each
semester from the Idaho Promise Scholarship.
Recent trials in business operations for my parents have
limited that financial resource; they no longer have the money to
loan me, so I will need to resort to other means of financing my
tuition. I plan to do
this through a school loan.
I would like to avoid getting into a great amount of debt;
however, I feel that education and owning a home are two things
worthy of debt. I would
like to keep purchasing any other items on credit to an extreme
minimum. One way I plan
to finance my education is through a student loan and any grants or
scholarships I may receive to relieve the burden.
In the long run, I would like to try and obtain a masters
degree. Due to the lack
of experience in upper division business courses, I am not sure if
that degree will be pursued in an MBA or some other field of work.
I hear older people say how valuable an education is.
Though I don’t fully comprehend or understand that statement,
I believe it. I feel
like the more I can learn now, the greater advantage I will have on
learning things throughout my entire life.
That is why I feel it is worth sacrificing things such as a
full time job, my personal time, and other opportunities to get an
education in business.
Work
Though I am not engaged in full time work for financial
support, I feel work is another priority that will decided my
success or failure in becoming the person I would like to do.
There is no satisfactory substitute for hard work.
I believe it is the key to success in excelling through
everything in life such as a career, an education, and personal life
as a husband and father.
My success at work can be measure by my ability to provide for my
family.
I am grateful for the opportunities I’ve had in life to work
for a wage. One of my
first jobs was moving pipe in a farmer’s field for several hours a
day. This experience
taught me how to be patient.
It helped me learn that there are always unexpected problems
that arise on the job.
It also helped me see the financial benefits of hard work.
I had an opportunity to work at Pier 49 Pizza for a couple of
years. There I learned
some skills and concepts I believe will help me throughout the rest
of my career. These
concepts include the importance of efficiency and customer
satisfactions.
I recently worked for my father at John Merzlock Appraisals.
There I developed skills in typing, computer software, book
keeping, and secretarial work.
More importantly, learned exactly what things I would value
in my own business.
These things often differed from the values of my boss so it has
taught me a lot about compromising my personal preferences and
focusing on the goals of my employer.
Personal Life
I think my entire purpose in life is to marry and have
children. All other
things only enhance this experience.
My goal in becoming a husband and father is in many ways
related to the goals of my own parents.
I want to raise children and teach them values that are
important to me pertaining to religion, education, and work.
I want to be able to provide
opportunities and an environment where my children can learn what I
consider to be the greater things in life.
I would like to be the main resource in their education and
development, not only financially, but academically.
Because of the great demand for time in adulthood, I believe
I will have to sacrifice time at work to spend time with my family.
This is where planning is so important. My effort and
planning as a father and husband will be reflected in our ability to
be a happy and productive family.
One of my greatest concerns is helping my children gain their
own personal values. We
live in a world where we are influenced from so many different
directions. The areas of
specific concern as a father are drugs, alcohol, sex, and crime.
I believe that these things can be avoided when there is
constant love and consistent communication between a child and their
parents. I believe the
only way to teach anything is through example.
Recreation
A few years ago, we decided as a family that we would have an
annual family reunion involving my parents, siblings, and their
children. It has really
been a lot of fun. Every
year one of the siblings is in charge of planning the reunion.
In the past we have been to boating in Bear Lake, camping in
Island Park, and fishing in Idaho Falls.
I believe that this traditional will keep us updated on the
plans and concerns of people within the family.
It will also be the source of education and recreation for us
all.
One other tradition I would like to continue is an annual
sports road trip. Each
year we have had the chance to follow the Denver Broncos football
team and go to at least one game.
It has given us the opportunity of visiting Denver, Buffalo,
Phoenix, and San Diego.
I think this has really helped me to have a good balance in my life
and build a link between school and work and the rewards that come
from doing both well.
